Is your building secure?
Fire alarms and detection systems are critical safety features for every building.
Every piece of your fire alarm and detection system needs to work together correctly to save the lives of the people inside. Here are the vital components of a complete fire alarm system.
FIRE ALARM INITIATING DEVICES
An alarm initiating device activates when the system detects a fire. You have two different types of devices:
MANUAL INITIATING DEVICES
Some examples of these devices are:
- Pull stations
- Break glass stations
These devices need to be manually activated when someone notices a fire. Mark these devices and make them easy to use.
AUTOMATIC INITIATING DEVICES
These devices trigger an alarm when they detect:
When the system detects any of these events, the devices send a signal to the main control panel to set off the alarm.
FIRE NOTIFICATION DEVICES
Notification devices alert people when a fire is detected. These devices include:
- Voice evacuation
FIRE ALARM CONTROL PANEL (FACP)
The FACP is the brain of the fire detection system. When an initiation device goes off, it sends a signal to the control panel. This signal triggers the alarms.
The control panel shows you the system status, and you can see when it detects an issue so you can control it manually.
PRIMARY AND BACKUP POWER SUPPLIES
Your power company supplies the power for your alarm system. But you will need your alarm system to run even when the primary power should fail.
Even when the power goes out, your alarm system still needs to function to notify people should a fire occur. A backup power supply will include batteries to keep your alarm system running in case of a power failure.
BUILDING SAFETY DEVICES
These interfaces can include the following:
- Exit lighting
- Fire doors
- Duct dampers
WHEN TRAGEDY STRIKES, MAKE SURE YOU’RE PREPARED.
When a fire happens, you need to make sure you have a system to alert people to the danger and get them to safety. Most importantly, make sure it works properly. Check each piece of your fire alarm system to ensure that your system will save lives when tragedy hits.
